This week, I talk about the danger of time wasters, eaters of time, the selfish and self-involved, who I have named as Time Bandits.
It’s been a few weeks since I've written a blog post and there’s a reason for this, I've got a bad case of time bandits who are stealing my time.
I don’t know if anyone else has this problem, it’s a bit like procrastinating but the complete opposite. I know that doesn't make any sense but in my world, for the month of March, nothing has made much sense at all. It’s been a busy, stressful few weeks and I have to say, I haven’t enjoyed it much and I’m salivating at the prospect of getting back to some writing.
What’s been taking up my time? The day job and all that goes with it. You see, the business of lion taming has times when it’s down and times when there’s so much to do, you want to lie down in the fast lane of the M1 and wait for death to happen because at least the work would bloody stop.
You think I’m kidding? Well, on the 26th March, several thousand fellow lion tamers like me went on strike, just for this reason. And now, I’m a union rep for lion tamers and so I was marching in Cambridge, with my high visibility jacket on because I had a modicum of authority and to my dismay, I ended up on the telly. Oh I spoke eloquently enough but I’d been hailed on, my hair had been invaded by invisible fairies and my mascara made me look as if I’d creosoted by eyes. Even my mum told me I looked like hell. Thanks Mum, keepin’ it real as ever.
It’s been really frustrating as there have been so many people and things pulling on my free hours and days and there comes a time when enough is enough. I already had to tell someone I know to go and do one due to a severe case of time wasting. It sounds selfish but sometimes you have to look at people who demand a lot from you but return very little as time bandits and they need to be put in their place. They steal time from you: time that could be spent writing or editing your novel, or seeing your real friends, and when you recognise a time bandit, you have to set the alarm and ding dong, time’s up and shut them down.
Sounds harsh but anyone who is a writer and also has a full time job knows that it can be a challenge to balance the two and the last thing you need are those pesky time bandits who want something from you, have no intention of returning the favour and will steal your precious time from you. Precious writing time.
And if you’re doing some writing, then don’t ever start playing Candy Crush Saga. It’s the digital equivalent of crack cocaine, only less value for money. It’s a digital time bandit and you have to uninstall and shut it down too.
Now to finish my ghost story novella, The Book of St Giles. Coming later in the year to a kindle or app near you!
